RICE & CARRY - THE AFTERLIFE OF MATERIAL

Rice & Carry begins where most systems end.

Discarded rice sacks, fishing rope, and textiles are collected, cleaned, and reworked into durable, functional objects. Their previous lives - graphics, textures, marks of wear, are not removed, but integrated into the final form.

Based in Sri Lanka, the practice is grounded in an all-women-led workshop, where making becomes a means of livelihood as much as design. Production is shaped by availability, by resourcefulness, and by the realities of material flow.

Each piece is both object and document, of circulation, of labour, of place.

What emerges is not just a product, but a rethinking of value: where waste is not excess, but potential.
